Oh So Coco For Coco

Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha launched her own blog earlier this month.

"As you may or may not know, I just finished revamping my website (http://www.coco-rocha.com/) and after doing so I came up with the idea of making my own blog. I didn't want it to be like any other fashion blog; this one would be about the day to day life as a model and the ins and outs of the fashion world, and of course I'll be adding some amazing videos that can only be found here at OH SO COCO!!"

It's cute and gives a great glimpse into the life of a "supermodel" for any teenagers out there who are fascinated by the whole glamour *cough* associated with modelling. You can even find out why her new red hair was under wraps for so long (Oh those pesky modelling contracts...) and what she didn't buy on Boxing Day. If you're into that kinda thing...

CBC Radio's Playlist For Obama

CBC Radio is inviting Canadians to choose 49 songs from Canadian artists that best define Canada for the incoming U.S. President Barack Obama.

The site states: "His playlist could definitely benefit from some Canadian content, especially given the depth of our musical offerings – spanning a wide variety of genres and representing our culture from coast to coast."

While that's nice to get people to list how many talented singer-songwriters have come from Canada, why wouldn't we want to make a list to our own PM? Oh, that's right - he just wouldn't listen...

Listen to CBC Radio to see what ends up on Obama's Playlist on inuguration day: January 20th.

Updated: Canadian Designers List

I finally had a chance to add a whole pile of Canadian designers to my list. Check them out on the widget to the right. Let me know if I might have missed someone!

:)

RIP Bettie Page: The Ultimate Pin-up

Bettie Page died at the age of 85.

"I don't know what they mean by an icon. I never thought of myself as being that. It seems strange to me. I was just modeling, thinking of as many different poses as possible. I made more money modeling than being a secretary. I had a lot of free time. You could go back to work after an absence of a few months. I couldn't do that as a secretary." - Bettie Page

There are some great links to articles on The Infectious Bettie Page blog if you want to learn more about her life.

Ketel One: Number One?

The lovely people at Matchstick invited me and a guest to The Spoke Club for a private vodka tasting. I brought along fellow blogger and good friend Anita from I Want I Got. We were treated to complimentary Ketel One martinis followed by a bubbly speech from the Ketel One representative who gave us a rundown on the history of the family brand and what it's made from. (Ketel One is over 300 years old and is made from wheat.)

Then we got to tasting various vodkas, all at room temperature - first the Ketel One vodka, then Grey Goose, then Absolut Vodka. I had had Ketel One before and knew it was a really smooth vodka, but had no idea there was such a difference between them all.

Ketel One really did come out number one! It is so smooth and doesn't burn as much going down. Grey Goose was good too, but there was more of a scent and a bit more of a burn. The Absolut compared to the others smelled foul and totally burned.

The best part, besides getting a little tipsy for free was the goodie bag which contained a bottle of Ketel One, a mini bottle of my fave liquer Grand Marnier, a Ketel One martini shaker, and a receipe card. That bag did contain some good stuff!

OK, I'm off to make myself an Ultimate Ketel One Cosmopolitan.

Project Runway Canada 2 Line Up

Project Runway Canada announced their line-up of designers today! I was soooo happy to see a few familiar names, but one in particular is Sunny Fong who I worked with a few years ago with models when he launched his Vawk line. Not only is Sunny intensely talented, he is also one of the most genuine and wonderfully nice people you could ever wish to meet. I ran into him last winter and mentioned he should enter, then I bumped into him at the Lady Gaga show on Sunday and he never mentioned a thing. (Which he really couldn't do until it was officially announced.) I am so happy for him! He's my pick to win! Go SUNNY!!!!!

PS - anyone else notice how Iman's bust line is unusually large in this image?

Kylie & Coldplay

If you've been on this blog before you'll know I am a big Kylie fan, but I'm just not feeling this song so much. The opening sounds like she's ready to spring off into a cover off "All By Myself" Bridget Jones styles. Oh well, 'tis for a good cause.

Song by Coldplay and Kylie Minogue, released in support of World AIDS Day, (RED)WIRE, (RED)'s new digital music magazine designed to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. Some of the greatest artists on earth have contributed amazing songs to (RED)WIRE such as this one. Visit http://red.msn.com/ or http://www.redwire.com/ for more details.

Dance Cards: My How Times Have Changed

In honour of Worn Journal's Winter Formal Slow Dance, I'd like to prepare you with a little history on the dance card.

Dance cards became trendy items at balls in the early 19th century. They were a way for a lady to keep track of the gentlemen she had promised dances to during the evening.

Masters of ceremony and floors managers guaranteed that young ladies would only have to dance with gentlemen who were their social equals. Today, that is called “Cover Charge and Over-Priced Drinks". The floor managers saw that order and decorum were kept during the evening. Today, these guys are called “Bouncers”. They had to screen out undesirable elements, such as prostitutes who found masquerade balls easy to infiltrate - Today, those are called “Hoochie Mamas”, they had to keep an eye on alcohol consumption - Today, that is called “Last Call”, and saw that no young lady went without a suitable partner - Today, that is called a “Wing Gal”.

Dance cards were generally given only to ladies. Gentlemen were supposed to remember to whom they had promised dances. Yeah, that wouldn’t work today… The front cover of the dance card told the occasion for the event, the location, the date, sometimes the price of the ticket, and often the name of the band that would be playing that evening. Today, we get event invitations on Facebook.

The interior of the dance card usually contained a list of the evening's dances, with spaces provided for the names of the gentlemen to whom the lady had promised them. Today, ladies dance with their gal pals and diss guys who try to dance with them. Sometimes the dances were listed generically; "waltz" "polka" "two-step" etc., these lists provide us with valuable information about the types of dances and the musical selections that were popular in any period. Today, we get our groove on to The Pussycat Dolls and Lady Gaga.

And a scene from
Meet Me In St. Louis to show you how it's done, well, or not done:

Gotta love Judy!

Worn recently moved from Montreal, and is now launching it's first Toronto-made issue with a Winter Formal Slowdance. You get a dancecard to reserve a special tune and Resident Dancers for any shy boys and girls. There is also a photographer to take date and non-date photos to remember the night (and outfits) by.

What is Worn Fashion Journal?
Part fashion magazine, part academic journal, and part personal zine, Worn Fashion Journal is a truly independent publication. Driven by sales (not advertising) Worn offers unique perspectives on fashion, creating a diverse and inclusive alternative to mainstream fashion magazines. Articles deal with concepts and ideas around fashion from a historical, cultural, political and practical perspective. Issue includes articles on mannequin history, global fashion, luxury branding, and spandex. Yes, you heard right, spandex. It's got all that plus regular columns and photoshoots, too, in one very pretty little package. So you can see, Worn has a lot to celebrate. www.wornjournal.com

Mod Club Celebrates 5 Years

Anyone else out there remember Wednesday nights at Lava Lounge on College before the building sold and was turned into condos? Mod Club Wednesdays were fun and always brought out an eclectic crowd of hipsters - and that was pre-Hipsterville Toronto. So the boys (DJ's Mark Holmes formerly of Platinum Blond and Bobbi Guy) ventured a few blocks west and opened The Mod Club - one of my favourite places to see bands. Off the top of my head I've seen Mika, Lykke Li, Brazilian Girls, New Young Pony Club, Dragonette and a whole slew of others there.

Mika at Mod Club.

So, 5 years have past, so why not celebrate at The Mod Club 5th Anniversary Party this Saturday, November 29 @ 9:30pm til 3am at (where else?) The Mod Club, 722 College St. West (east of Ossington @ Crawford - in the heart of “Little Italy”.) Just stumbling steps from my home...

Madge for Vuitton?

According to Style File the Queen of Pop Madonna is going to be the new face of Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2009 campaign AND apparently it's already been shot by my fave photo team Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. The last high-end ad campaign she did was Versace (in my mind I am pronouncing it a-la Showgirls, ver-sayce).

Madonna for Versace in 2005

I pray that it's better than the disastrous ads Versace put out with Madge back in 2005. (Did they not even warn her they were shooting?) Mind you the first ad campaign she did for Versace in 1995 was stunning, stunning, stunning!

Madonna for Versace in 1995

CNTM on CTV

CTV can add yet another reality contest show to their already strong lineup that includes Canadian Idol and So You Think You Can Dance Canada - they just announced that they are looking for Canada's Next Top Model! Mr Jay Manuel is back with his airbrushed pretty face as host.

(I really never understood why this promo shot looks like a sci-fi movie)

Here's where I get lazy and just copy & paste stuff. (It really is soooo much easier.)

CTV announced today it is looking for Canada's Next Top Model. Recruitment starts today for competitors for the third cycle of the 2007 Gemini winner for Best Reality Program or Series, which will air for the first time on CTV in 2009.

In a program first, Canada's Next Top Model hopefuls have the option of submitting their application packages online at the series' all-new website, model.ctv.ca. Applications are being received now through December 22, 2008. Thousands will apply, but only 10 women will compete on-air for an incredible grand prize that includes a $100,000 beauty contract.

"With the enormous success of So You Think You Can Dance Canada and Canadian Idol, we can't wait to take Canada's Next Top Model to the next level," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. "We will continue to bring the sidewalk to the catwalk, providing 10 young women an opportunity of a lifetime and the winner with the chance to jumpstart her modeling career."

Canada's Next Top Model returns with the hope of finding 10 young women who think they have what it takes to make it in the high-stress, high-stakes world of modeling. To qualify, applicants must be female, between the ages of 18-23 (as of Friday, January 30, 2009), Canadian citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada, and at least 5'8" in height. Participants must also be prepared to spend five weeks away from family and friends and must not be locked into a current modeling contract. For up-to-date audition information and/or to download the official application kit and apply, visit www.model.ctv.ca.

Rebecca Hardy, from Manheim, ON, was named the Cycle 2 winner of Canada's Next Top Model. Since her win, Hardy has worked with top photographers and on the runways of high fashion markets including Milan and London. Since winning, Rebecca has walked the runway for Aritzia, Calvin Klein, Greta Constantine, G-SUS, Nada Yousif and Evan Biddell.

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

Halloween decorations are down and all the Christmas stuff is up now. Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Winter Solstice is upon us once again! (Or should we just call it "shopping season"?)

At least the weather is keeping us from forgetting that winter (brrrr...) is almost here too. Right now with the economy in the _______ [insert phrase] and the nice weather, I bet all retail outlets are praying for an early winter. When it's nice outside, holiday retail sales tend to be low but when there is snow on the ground, everyone gets in the spirit and retail sales rise. (Yay snow!)

Speaking of holiday shopping, click the image below to check out some gift ideas from Montreal-based m0851.

Watch this: Lagerfeld Lady

My fave Toronto band Fritz Helder & the Phantoms held their video launch party for their second single Lagerfeld Lady last night at Strange Love before jetting across the border to open for Lady Gaga in New York City. Shot in Paris earlier this year, the song is an ode to Mr Lagerfeld himself.

Watch and enjoy the fabulocity!

Love. Angel. Music. Smell.

Gwen Stefani just won't let up on her Harajuku girl obsession. A century from now when people look back on pop culture she'll be known as "the blonde singer who paid four Japanese women dressed as dolls to follow her around everywhere." Strange, really... But I do love Gweny Gwen Gwen.

Now she's hoping on that lucrative fragrance bandwagon with her own series of perfumes. Go to http://www.fatalattractiontocutesample.com/ to sign up for your free samples and your chance to win a $250 gift certificate to Shoppers.

If you don't have a chance to enter you can always pop by your local Shoppers Drug Mart to get a whiff. Once I get my samples I'll put up my review.

CARE to TRUTH or DARE?

The TRUTH is that one half of Malawi’s one million orphans have lost one or both parents to AIDS, the DARE is for 800 Madonna fans to donate money at the one-time screening of Madonna’s Truth or Dare on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Bloor Cinema to support Raising Malawi. As first revealed on Laineygossip.com, this special occasion which has been approved by Madonna, will be a chance for Madonna fans to have a flashback to the infamous Blonde Ambition Tour. Hosted by Elaine Lui (eTalk host and blogger for Laineygossip.com) and Iain Christiansen, CARE to TRUTH or DARE? will open its doors at 7 p.m., and the screening will commence at 8 p.m. As an incentive for fans to attend, the screening will also feature a sneak preview of Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom.

The event is open to the public; however no tickets will be sold in advance. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to show up early and make a donation at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor St. W.) box office. Only the first 800 donors will be admitted to the theatre. Please note that there is a suggested minimum donation of $15. 100 per cent of proceeds will be donated to Raising Malawi and guests will be informed how much has been raised once the screening has finished.

“Everyday in Malawi, hundreds of children die from preventable illness, thousands are affected by abuse and neglect, and millions face a lonely struggle for survival without parents or adult supervision,” says Madonna. “I urge you to please support Raising Malawi and remember: by committing a little bit of your time, talent, or treasures to these extraordinary children, you will help to save a life.”

“A night with Madonna and a few hundred of her most hardcore fans - all in support of a cause close to her heart... I can't think of a smuttier (in the best way possible!) way to celebrate her career!” says Elaine Lui.

Since 2006, Raising Malawi has been dedicated to bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s one million orphans. Co-founded by Madonna and Michael Berg, Raising Malawi uses a community-based approach to provide immediate direct physical assistance, support long-term sustainability, create education and psycho-social programs and build global awareness through multi-media and worldwide volunteer efforts. Raising Malawi works to distribute financial support that will help community-based organizations provide vulnerable children with nutritious food, proper clothing, secure shelter, formal education, targeted medical care and emotional support.

Truth or Dare, distributed by Miramax Films, is a revealing documentary chronicling the life of Madonna behind the scenes of her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. Released in 1991, the film was well-received by critics and at the box office. As of 2006, it is the sixth-highest grossing documentary of all time with a worldwide gross of $29 million.

Madonna's directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, is a hilariously sexy tale of three roommates who must delve into mischievous and naughty behavior in pursuit of bigger and brighter futures. A Ukrainian immigrant, A.K. finances his dreams of 'trans-continental superstardom' with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly, an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa's youth. Filth and Wisdom is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness. Opens in select cities on October 24th.

Sponsors for the event include Laineygossip.com, The Bloor Cinema, E1 Films Canada Inc., Proud FM (103.9 FM), Sans Blah, Pauper’s Pub and Lucy Kilislian of Toronto’s Barclay Jewelry.
