HBC's Olympic Gear Goes East

I'm really impressed with the design of HBC's collection for the Beijing Olympics. The designer Tu Ly put a lot of thought into it combining western athletic gear with Asian symbols. I love the graphics incorporating the Canadian maple leaf with the five Chinese elements: water, fire, earth, metal, and wood; and the number 8 - which is a lucky number in China. With the Olympics beginning on the 8th day of the 8th month, at 8 minutes past the 8th hour in '08 it seems fitting the Olympics are being held in China. (Let's not get political here - let's focus on the athletes...)

Of course some of these items should not be worn together unless you like that old-school rapper look, but it's better than Team US's boring "tennis anyone" Ralph Lauren designs.

View the bamboo and organic cotton collection and photo shoot here - you'll see some incredible moves by the models.

There has been some flak given to the fact that they were produced in China, but to give them credit, I don't think there is a manufacturing plant in Canada that has the man power to produce such a large order and to maintain the current prices. Am I wrong?

Check out the entire line here.

Go Team Canada!

Meh. I don't think it's the best design. What does it say about Canadian culture? Nothing. Why are we giving a design nod to a country with such a horrible human rights record?

And they should have tried finding some suppliers in Canada. If you want to support Canadian athletes, support the economy they come from. Give Canadians jobs!

GO CANADA GO!

i totally agree with meaghan. I'm not so keen on the design. it little "i get, the Olympics are in china." Also it looks cheap. It looks like reject roots. which is odd because i didn't like what roots did for Canada for the 2004 Olympics.
I know the Bay is trying really hard to revamp its image, but making pj like athletic wear is not the way to go. The design should reflect the quality of our athletes and i think the Bay's go at it falls a little short.

but, as meaghan said, Go Canada Go.

Meaghan (-like I said, Iet's not get political here-) If you can prove me wrong about the Canadian suppliers being able to produce the demand at the same retail cost, please let me know. I'd love to reference them.

Another thing I think is great about it also is that HBC is aiming to raise $20 million by 2012 for the athletes and each year the HBC foundation will grant $5,000 to 200 of Canada's most promising athletes. THEN all the remaining proceeds will be invested in sports organizations and training centres.

As we have all said: Go Team Canada! (erm, and anyone Scottish *cough*)
